Movement Therapy
Movement therapy is just what it sounds like: using movement-based practices to treat an ailment. Rather than a hard core workout, movement therapy is gentle and intentional, focused on balancing our internal energy and improving the mind-body connection. Research shows promise in treating chronic pelvic pain.
What is Movement Therapy?
Movement therapy refers to using gentle, intentional, movement-based practices to help improve the mind-body connection and foster better health and wellness. Many forms of movement therapy, such as Yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong, are rooted in Eastern philosophy. Others include pilates and dance therapy. For centuries, people have turned to these practices to restore balance and harmony to the body's energy system, which is intricately connected to our physical bodies. Movement therapy can help:
Improve flexibility, balance and coordination
Reduce muscle tension, especially in the pelvic floor
Improve circulation in the pelvic area, which can reduce inflammation
Promote relaxation, which can reduce pain perception
Who Can Benefit From Movement Therapy?
Movement therapy can be particularly beneficial for:
Pre- and post-natal individuals
Movement therapy can help reduce muscle tension, promote relaxation, and increase body awareness – all of which can benefit women whose bodies (and minds!) are adapting to carrying or birthing a child.
Women in mid-life
Research shows that movement therapy can help reduce pelvic pain (through pelvic floor training), minimize bone density loss (through gentle strength training) and reduce the risk of falls (through balance training) in women in their 50s and beyond.
Anyone suffering from pelvic pain
Movement therapy can help you connect better with your body – especially your pelvic floor muscles – to use them more effectively and alleviate pelvic pain. It can be especially beneficial when used together with yoga therapy to improve flexibility and range of motion.
Movement-based therapies encourage active participation in your own health, empowering you with a sense of agency in your health and wellness.
At Proactive Pelvic Health Centre, we offer both small group classes and 1-on-1 movement therapy, with focused instruction on addressing pelvic health concerns.
